The Natural History Museum "Gustavo Orcés V." maintains one of the largest collections of vertebrates and invertebrates in the country. Currently, there are 450,000 specimens of fish, 31,515 terrestrial invertebrates, 205,996 aquatic invertebrates and 30,082 terrestrial vertebrates. The specimens are used for ecology, taxonomy and biogeography research mainly.
