The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie Herbarium (SALK) was founded in 2013. SALK houses vascular plants collected from several southeastern ecological regions with a concentration of specimens from the Middle Atlantic and Southern Coastal Plain of southwestern South Carolina, particularly the Carolina Flatwoods, Mid-Atlantic Floodplains and Low Terraces, and Sea Islands/Coastal Marsh ecoregions. SALK also includes a component of specimens from Georgia, North Carolina, and Arkansas. Efforts to locate and document unique plant communities and species with conservation status are on-going.
