Hippocampus Association is an NGO created by a group of volunteers from the Murcia Region Environmental volunteer program in protected areas in 2007. The main aim has been to study the population of the long-snouted seahorse ( Hippocampus guttulatus) and other Sygnatidae species at Mar Menor Lagoon, The largest Coastal Lagoon in the Mediterranean sea. After 15 years of volunteer work guided by scientists and professionals (citizen science) making underwater fish census, our organization pretends to contribute to the participatory management approach, providing evidence of a severe decline of seahorses in this SE of Spain lagoon due to multiple anthropogenic factors maintained for more than 30 years. We want to increase the level of protection of this specie at the national level and provide this field data to enhance the official records for its study, recovery, and conservation worldwide.
