"Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University (UNN) is one of the leading comprehensive universities in Russia. It was founded in 1916 and includes a Fundamental Library (its collections number 2,200,000 volumes), a Center for Innovative Technologies and 5 museums, one of which is the Zoological Museum (one of the top 5 university zoological museums in Russia). The zoological exposition is the largest zoological collection in the Nizhny Novgorod region, collected by scientists and students of the university. Animals from all continents and oceans are represented, the richest is the fauna of the European part of Russia.
There are many centers in UNN, and some of them are the result of international cooperation. The Biodiversity and Biologically Active Substances Education Centre is active in research work in botany, zoology, and ecology. There is a Botanical Collections Fund (NNSU Herbarium), which has been recognized as one of the largest herbariums in Russia. Unique collection plantations of the Botanical Garden of UNN are of great scientific, cultural and historical value. A number of endangered plant species are cultivated on its territory. There are departments within the university that are dedicated to describing forest, meadow, swamp and steppe communities.
The Centre for Molecular Biology and Regional Ecology works with other IBBM centres to expand opportunities for students and researchers."
