"Hémera" Earth Observation Center (Centro Hémera, in spanish) is part of the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Mayor. Since its creation in 2017, Hémera Center has aimed to promote interdisciplinary research integrating scientific discovery, innovation, and technological transfer, with advanced human capital formation to contribute to developing a knowledge-based society with a global and local impact.
The mission of the Hémera Center is to contribute to the development of society through the use and application of terrestrial observation technologies in partnership with public and private institutions, both nationally and internationally. Its vision is to lead basic and applied research projects in remote sensing to contribute to the planning, management, and utilization of natural resources.
The Hémera Center comprises various researchers working in basic and applied remote sensing. Research topics include: (1) Monitoring land use, vegetation changes, and biodiversity survey; (2) Characterization of agricultural species and their evolution, analyzing and modeling different environmental scenarios; (3) Study and monitoring of the state and quality of oceanic and continental waters; (4) Tracking the effects of climate change and its link to the conservation of natural resources; (5) Evaluation of geological and geomorphological conditions, and the use of remote sensing for disaster preparedness, management, and impact reduction.
