With increasing interests in animal sciences and environmental conservation, the functions and activities of the department have been reoriented to cover different aspects to meet the national demands and international standard to:

Produce skilled manpower in pure and applied zoology.

Explore and determine faunal wealth of Nepal by making field studies.

Conduct faunal diversity research to determine status.

Conduct research on wildlife ecology, behaviour and conservation biology.

Maintain Zoological Museum of Natural History and economic Zoology for teaching and research.

Impart training and research for collection and preservation of animals.
