CIEMEP is a multidisciplinary research institute with dual affiliation to the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco (UNPSJB). It was created in 2013 by agreement between both institutions with the aim of promoting interaction with the environment through the transfer of knowledge and experience from its researchers, with the purpose of contributing to the resolution of local, regional and/or national issues. The main objective of CIEMEP is to conduct scientific research focused on the protection, conservation and management of aquatic and terrestrial natural ecosystems, promoting the development of interdisciplinary projects and the link with society through the transfer and dissemination of knowledge. Currently, it covers 15 research lines in which approximately 50 people work, including researchers, university professors, undergraduate and graduate students and technical support staff.
The institute has various biological and paleontological collections and the different working groups have biological, paleontological, environmental, human and geological databases; which together enable high-impact research in the Patagonian region. Among the aspects addressed are: basic and applied ecology of Patagonian aquatic environments, systematics, taxonomy and biology of aquatic insects, ecology of bird populations and communities, study of seed dispersal processes, Patagonian ethnobiology, geomorphology and hydrology, paleontology of invertebrates and vertebrates, evolution, ecology, biogeography and conservation of American mammals, among others.
