The research activity of the Institute aims at the study of structure, functioning and steadiness of northern ecosystems; as well as at the elaboration of scientific grounds for protection, smarter use and reproduction of biological resources of the Yakutian part of cryolithozone under conditions of changing climate and sustainable development of the Arctic. And getting knowledge on the species diversity of living organisms of Yakutia (Northeastern Siberia) is one of the primary tasks to achieve this goal. The Herbarium collection of the Institute (SASY) contains ca. 95,000 samples of vascular plants, lichens, algae and fungi. The entomological collection comprises over 200,000 specimens representing 20 orders of insects and arachnids. The Botanical Garden of the Institute conducts the studies on the introduction of local and non-indigenous flora including the ornamental, edible, medicinal and rare and endangered plant species (1155 taxa). The collaboration with the Institute of Permafrost SB RAS (Yakutsk) and the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (Saint-Petersburg) has led to the establishment of a vault in perennially frozen grounds. Its purpose is to preserve the genebanks of valuable Russian food crops and wild Siberian plants under natural freezing conditions. At the moment, ca. 10,000 seed samples are stored there with the capabilty of up to 100,000 samples.
