Public descriptionThe University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, established in 1176, is ranked among the top Italian universities for quality of teaching and research. The researchers participating to the GBIF’s projects work at the Department of Life Sciences. Their research focuses on systematics (taxonomy), ecology and biomonitoring of meiofaunal organisms, and in ecology, monitoring and conservation of avifauna, herpetofauna, and ichthyofauna. Research activities are conducted in collaboration with academic institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, in Europe, America and South Africa. The Department of Life Sciences sponsored the creation of the Scientific Station “Italia - Costa Rica” located in the Karen Mogensen Wildlife Refuge, north-western Costa Rica. The researchers participating to the GBIF’s projects lead their activities within this protected area in cooperation with local personnel, focusing mainly on vertebrate fauna.
Numerous long-term field studies conducted by the researchers in collaboration with Italian local authorities have contributed (1) to improve knowledge about the avifauna, herpetofauna and ichthyofauna of several local sites, (2) to create a regional wildlife database, and, more generally, (3) to promote the local conservation of protected species and to the management of some invasive species.
