Public descriptionPacific Salmon Foundation was founded in 1987 with the mission of providing thoughtful leadership in the conservation, restoration, and enhancement of Pacific salmon and their ecosystems. It is currently comprised of four core programs: Community Salmon Program focused on grant making focused on community-led restoration and enhancement initiatives; Marine Science Program which conducts research and applied action to better understand the environmental and limiting factors affecting salmon populations; Climate Adaptation which focuses on the impacts of climate change on salmon habitat and the areas where people can help them adapt; and Watersheds, which provides data and conducts monitoring to support critical management decisions through open source sharing of information.
The Marine Science Program created the Strait of Georgia Data Centre (SGDC) and since 2011, it has been collecting marine ecosystem data for the Strait of Georgia and providing these data through this online portal. The SGDC is designed to serve as a central data repository, to protect and collate marine ecosystem information for the Strait of Georgia, and to allow for data sharing and integration. It continues to work with researchers, community and stewardship groups, First Nations, academics and non-profits to bring their datasets to the Data Centre. Last, the SGDC also creates and hosts many mapping products, both static maps, animations, and story maps, to allow for visual interpretation and increased visibility to many of the data sets it houses.
