Public description

The subclass Collembola (springtails) comprises four orders and approximately 200-300 species in the UK. Despite being very abundant animals, with thousands of individuals found in every square metre of soil, very little is known about their ecology. They are likely to be critical for soil health and agriculture, and therefore the economy more broadly. Furthermore, many undescribed species have been introduced into the UK, probably via the horticultural trade. This recording scheme collates records from multiple sources of all springtails recorded in the UK in order to build our knowledge of the distribution and diversity of springtails in the country.
