Tha Natural park "Samarovskiy Chugas" established in 2001 and protects dark coniferous forests and other ecosystems in the vicinity of Khanty-Mansiysk town, with total area about 7 thousand hectares. It has three main geographical areas, including floodplain islands, the main area surrounding the Khanty-Mansiysk town, and the Shapsha village area. The park organizes permanent monitoring of populations of plants and animals in the area, as well as different kind of biodiversity inventory by invited researchers. [В целях сохранения уникальных природных комплексов 16 января 2001 года вышло распоряжение Департамента государственной собственности Ханты — Мансийского автономного округа «О создании Учреждения Ханты - Мансийского автономного округа природный парк «Самаровский чугас» общей площадью 6621 га. Природный парк состоит из трех участков: 1) урочище «Острова» (площадь 1188 га); 2) урочище «Городские леса» (площадь 3303 га); 3) урочище «Шапшинское» (площадь 2130 га). На территории парка, в рамках государственного задания, ежегодно проводится 14 научно-исследовательских работ.]
