The Mangyshlak Experimental Botanical Garden is the only scientific organization in Western Kazakhstan, whose tasks include mobilizing the gene pool of domestic and world flora in extra-arid natural and climatic conditions.

The Mangyshlak Experimental Botanical Garden was formed on the basis of a stationary expedition, by the decision of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on Science and Technology No. 61 dated 01.12. 1970, by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR No. 129 of 03/09/1971 and the Decree of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR No. 59 of 03/25/1971 for Shevchenko (now Aktau).

The actual beginning of the work of the garden dates back to January 1972.

Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 745 dated 19.07.2005 The Mangyshlak Experimental Botanical Garden is included in the "List of Specially Protected Natural Territories of Republican Significance" with a total area of 39 hectares.

Due to the uniqueness of the collection in the arid natural conditions of Mangyshlak, the Garden is included in the International Register and is a member of the Council of Botanical Gardens of the CIS countries under the International Association of the Academy of Sciences, the International Council of Botanical Gardens for Plant Protection.

The main scientific directions of MEBG:

- Preservation and development of a unique collection fund of plants, created in extreme natural conditions of the desert zone of Western Kazakhstan;

- Carrying out fundamental and applied research in the field of introduction and acclimatization of plants in the arid conditions of the Kazakhstan Caspian Sea;

- Development of scientific bases for plant protection (in situ and ex situ) and plant resource management.

- Protection and reproduction in a culture of rare, endangered and exotic plants

- Creation of collections, seed and herbarium funds of plants, development of a production range of plants;

- Creation of introductory plant nurseries, development of a reproduction nursery base for open and protected ground for growing and selling seed and planting material;

- Organization and implementation of regimes for the protection of specially protected natural areas.
