La UPEC juntamente con el Programa Mundial de Alimentos firmaron un convenio en el cual se establecieron iniciar proyectos para beneficio social. El herbario es producto del proyecto en el cual se muestra a las especies vegetales con una ficha técnica botánica y el cual ancla su información al Banco de germoplasma “in vivo” constituido por el jardín botánico. La toma y colecta de muestras vegetales se efectuaron en las provincias de Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Carchi y Sucumbíos.
