El Resguardo Indígena Awá Pialapí Pueblo Viejo fue creado mediante la resolución 001 del 9 de febrero de 1993, con el fin de conservar y proteger el territorio y darle uso racional a la fauna y a la flora, teniendo como principio el respeto por la madre tierra y la preservación de los recursos naturales, pensando en las generaciones venideras, con un área de 7.000 hectáreas. De acuerdo a sus líneas de acción, cada familia o comunero del Cabildo debe regirse bajo el mandato ancestral de justicia propia, el cual regula el manejo adecuado del territorio bajo el precepto del respeto por los ecosistemas y el uso del conocimiento ancestral del manejo de los recursos naturales y del suelo.
