Public description

Conrad Asia Energy Ltd (CONRAD) holds a 76.5% operated interest in the Duyung PSC via its wholly owned subsidiary, West Natuna Exploration Limited, with the project located in Riau Islands, Indonesian. The Duyung PSC is in the Natuna area, approximately 100 kilometres north of Matak Island and about 400 kilometres northeast of Singapore.

The Duyung PSC contains the Mako Gas Field, a continuous “single tank” of methane gas with insignificant impurities (98% methane, no mercury, no heavy metals), and a high permeability reservoir with excellent productive capability.

This report evaluates the Biodiversity Risk/Critical Habitat risks linked to activities at the Mako gas project during the project execution and operational stages and specifically activities related to:

- Exploration and surveying: involve conducting geophysical surveys to identify potential gas volumes, as well as seabed surveys to identify the best location for the installation of wells and facilities.

- Design and engineering: Once the location has been identified, the installation is designed and engineered. This includes selecting the appropriate equipment and technologies to extract, process, and transport the gas, as well as designing the infrastructure required to support the installation, such as platforms, pipelines, and storage facilities.

- Construction and installation: Once the design is complete, the installation is constructed and installed. This involves mobilizing equipment and personnel to the site, as well as constructing the necessary infrastructure and installing the equipment and technologies.

- Commissioning and start-up: Once the installation is in place, it is commissioned and started up. This involves testing and verifying that all systems are functioning properly, and that the installation is operating safely and efficiently.

- Production operations: Once the installation is operational, it enters the production operations phase. This involves extracting and processing the gas, as well as transporting it to shore for distribution and sale.

- Maintenance and decommissioning: Throughout the life of the installation, regular maintenance and inspection are required to ensure that it remains safe and operational. When the installation reaches the end of its life, it is decommissioned and removed.

Each of the above activities have a conceptual potential to impact biodiversity and critical habitats directly or indirectly in the surrounding marine environment, and thus must be carefully planned, managed, and monitored to minimise any negative effects. The Biodiversity Risk assessment identifies potential impacts, evaluates their significance, and guides the development and application of appropriate management and mitigation strategies. Before a Critical Habitat Assessment (CHA) is done it is necessary to evaluate whether (a) there is critical habitat in the AoA and (b) if so, what will be the risks of impacts from project activities.
