Public descriptionThe University's natural history collection, established in1862, has grown
from teaching tools to a vital part of Philippine history. Its importance stems
from its historical significance and unique species, some of which represent
extinct or endangered species. The collection has also contributed to the
description of new species. Fr. Casto de Elera, O.P., the museum's first
director, played a crucial role, notably publishing the Catalogo Sistematico de
toda la Faunade Filipinas(1895-96), which brought international recognition
to the collection. His work provided comprehensive species data, making a
pioneering effort in cataloging Philippine fauna. The University of Santo
Tomas–Herpetological Research continues. de Elera's
legacy by modernizing the database and reorganizing the collection.
