Public description

The Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve Management regards itself as representatives of the Wienerwald region both internally and externally. It is a non-profit organisation which was founded by the Federal States of Lower Austria and Vienna. According to its corporate vision, the main objective is the development of a model region for a sustainable approach to living, working, learning and conservation.

Biodiversity research and environmental monitoring are integral parts of the BR’s activities. Together with experts from various fields of science as well as local stakeholders, the BR manages field surveys like 'Biodiversity Day' and implements projects like 'Safeguarding and monitoring biodiversity in the core zones of Vienna and Lower Austria'.

The Wienerwald was designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 2005 by UNESCO. This standing protects the great variety of natural and cultural elements that make this region so unique and valuable. BRs are ecosystems, recognized on the basis of uniform, internationally agreed criteria, where models of sustainable use of the biosphere are being developed, tested and implemented. The Wienerwald BR covers an area of 105,645 hectares and extends across 51 communities in Lower Austria and seven municipal districts in Vienna.
