The National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) was established in 1945 as a scientific unit of the Ministry of Agriculture. On the basis of the Government Order of 21 October 2003, the NVRI obtained the Status of the State Research Institute. The major mission of the Institute is applied research in veterinary medicine with particular emphasis on the diagnosis and control of animal infectious diseases including zoonoses as well as the hygiene and toxicology of food of animal origin and feeding stuffs.

Additionally, the Institute evaluates the quality of diagnostic kits, performs batch release of IVMP, and it runs postgraduate trainings and courses for specialists in different fields of veterinary medicine.
