Bohdan Khmelnytsky Melitopol State Pedagogical University has a history of more than 100 years and serves as a scientific center in southern Ukraine, where research on the biodiversity of the steppe zone has been traditionally conducted. Key aspects of this research include studies of the region's flora, encompassing both lower and higher vascular plants. Since 2000, university researchers have monitored the species composition of plants in the Kamiani Mohyly Nature Reserve. This reserve is a hotspot of regional floral biodiversity, where unique endemics of the Ukrainian steppe zone have been discovered. Significant efforts have also been directed toward the study of regional bird species. The university's database contains results of annual studies on the abundance and species composition of birds in various biotopes of the region dating back to 1988. Other faunal groups have also been studied by university scientists, including insects, spiders, mollusks, soil invertebrates, and others. Research on the flora and fauna of the region continues to this day. Making this information publicly available would help fill existing gaps in knowledge about species distribution in southern and eastern Ukraine.
