Public descriptionUniversity of Maria Curie-Skłodowska in Lublin (UMCS) is the largest university in Eastern Poland with 12 Faculties and more than 20 scientific institutes with the Institute of Biological Sciences among them. Main research areas of the Institute of Biological Sciences are environmental studies, human and health studies and molecular biology. In the area of environmental studies emphasis is put on investigations of the structure of ecosystems as well as local and global effects of the human impact on their characteristics and on elucidation of the mechanisms of adaptation of microorganisms, plants, and animals inhabiting contaminated areas degraded by human activity.
The Institute of Biological Sciences houses valuable natural history collections: botanical, mycological and entomological. The vascular plant collection comprises about 175,000 specimens, the bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) are represented by about 37,000 specimens and the algae by 2,000. The mycological collection covers all taxonomic groups of fungi as well as lichens and comprises about 185,000 specimens, including about 400 Mycetozoa, 25,000 microscopic fungi, 15,000 macroscopic fungi and 145,000 lichens. The entomological collection currently numbers more than one million scientific specimens and is still being supplemented.
